Throughout the season, Bucknell volleyball will be checking in with a student-athlete's perspective on competition, travel and team. First up is junior setter Rose Lewis, who shares the Bison's experiences from their recent trip to the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pa.
This past weekend we traveled to Pittsburgh, PA. For many of us, this was our first trip to the city of the Pirates and the Steelers. Not only did we participate in some great, competitive games, but were also exposed to a little bit of the city life.
During our sing-a-long/dance party on the ride in, we saw some of the beautiful, old brides leading into the city over the three converging rivers. Although we were jealous of the speed boaters racing by on a stunning Friday afternoon, there was a lot of excitement on the bus for the upcoming games. After our win at Robert Morris, we had a delicious team dinner at a great local spot. We all celebrated our victory over deadly garlic bread and lasagna.
The following morning we took a trip to the Duquesne Incline. It is a historic funicular that is still used as public transportation today. As we traveled up the hill in the small cart, many team members overcame their fear of heights as others enjoyed the scenic view of the city. At the top we had a blast taking pictures and taking in the scenery. We were able to be silly and bond with our teammates in an off-court environment. We traveled back down the incline, listened to (volunteer assistant coach) Anne Ellenberger's "party mix," and prepared for our afternoon games.
Overall, we were very happy with the success of the weekend. We welcomed Loyola (Md.) to the Patriot League by establishing ourselves and handing them a loss. We held tough with a strong A10 team and also beat a team on their home court with a very rowdy crowd. Although volleyball was the heart of our trip, we also were given a window into a new and different city.
