WORCESTER, Mass. - Bucknell volleyball fell two sets down early and, although it made a stand in the third set, could not maintain the pressure on Holy Cross as the Bison dropped a four-set match to the Crusaders in Worcester, Mass., on Saturday evening. Although the team result was not what Bucknell (6-11, 0-4 PL) was looking for, more than one Bison set career highs including Claire Healy with 14 kills and 18 digs.
Healy recorded the third double-double of her freshman season as she led the Bison in both kills and digs. Kat Tauscher finished with a double-double of her own, finishing the match with 41 assists, which the highest of the season for the senior, and 10 digs. Also putting new marks on the list of personal bests was Katie Price. The freshman, who entered the match with 28 digs on the year, tallied 15 against the Crusaders (1-17, 1-3 PL).
Despite the individual performances, Bucknell found itself in a nearly constant state of catch-up. The Bison dropped the first two sets, 25-23 and 26-24, then made a solid push in the third to close the gap with the Crusaders. Bucknell led almost from the start in that third frame and came one step closer to evening the match after a Kebah Edoho kill gave the Bison the 25-21 win.
The fourth set also looked as if it would go in Bucknell's favor. The Bison led as late as 21-20, but strong serving from Hannah Grace Stokes put an end to that. The Crusader had seven service aces in the match, five of which came in the fourth set and three of which came in the final five points of the match. Bucknell was able to save one match point, but an attack error gave the final score to Holy Cross, which captured its first win of the season.
After falling in straight sets at Holy Cross last fall, Bucknell has now lost back-to-back matches to the Crusaders for the first time since the 1990-91 seasons. The Bison are also 3-3 all-time against the Crusaders when the match goes four sets.
Leading the way for Holy Cross was Heather Roberts with 14 kills. Stokes also had 40 assists to go along with 10 digs and her seven aces. Elizabeth Watters led all players with 22 digs.
Bucknell will have a rare Thursday match when it returns to the court. The Bison will host Colgate at 7 p.m. on Oct. 4. The contest in Davis Gym will be broadcast live on Bison Vision at BucknellBison.com.
