Bison Men's Track's Arent, Donaldson, Powell Named Academic All-Patriot League

LEWISBURG, Pa. – For the second consecutive spring, Bucknell men's track and field led the way with three selections to the Academic All-Patriot League Team. Representing the Bison were Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence), Jordan Donaldson (Saxton, Pa./Tussey Mountain) and Andrew Powell (Charlton, Mass./St. John's), the league announced on Friday. All three have recorded cumulative grade-point averages of better than 3.4 and won at least one individual title at last week's Patriot League Championships.
The Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports last season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the track. The men's track & field team has 10 student-athletes. Student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and play an integral part in the team's success. Award winners are determined by a vote of the league's sports information directors who cannot vote for their own athletes.
Arent earned his second academic citation of the season and the third of his career on Friday. With a 3.45 GPA, the senior chemistry major was also an Academic All-Patriot League Team selection during indoor season and an all-academic selection during outdoor season in 2011. He has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor and Bucknell Dean's List several times throughout his career. Arent's off-the-track activities include participation in the Bucknell Institute for Leadership in Technology and Management in 2010, a program that focuses on globalization, ethics, communication and bridging the disciplines of engineering and management.
Earlier this month, Arent received the Christy Mathewson Award, presented to the outstanding senior athlete, at the 51st Annual Bucknell Athletics Senior Recognition Banquet. A few days later, he put together yet another impressive run at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships. Arent won both the 400-meter hurdles and the 110-meter hurdles, finished second in the 400 and placed fourth as a member of the 4x400 relay. His win in the longer hurdle race was the third straight of his career, while his title at the 110-meter distance was his first.
With six career outdoor conference titles, Arent is now tied for the most in program history. He also currently holds a number of individual event records at Bucknell, including the 110 hurdles (14.31) and 400 hurdles (51.59) outdoors. He also ranks in the top 10 in program history in the 400 and 4x400.
Donaldson is also a three-time All-Academic Team selection having also been voted to the squad last winter and during the spring of 2011. The senior has earned a 3.77 cumulative GPA while majoring in accounting and posted a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall 2011 semester. A five-time member of the Dean's List and three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Donaldson is also involved with the Alpha Lambda Delta Academic Fraternity and Bucknell Accounting Club.
At the recent Patriot League Championships, Donaldson successfully defended his title in the 800 meters, running a career-best 1:50.52. That time ranks fourth in program annals. He was also helped the 4x800 relay to a school record in 7:30.63, which was also good for third place at the championship meet. Donaldson now has seven program outdoor top-10 marks, which currently stands as third-most.
Arent and Donaldson will both compete at this weekend's IC4A Championships. Arent will showcase his skills in the 400 hurdles with the prelims scheduled for 5:10 p.m. on Saturday. Donaldson will compete in the 800 prelims at 4:50 p.m. Saturday.
As a member of both the track and men's soccer teams, Powell has built a lengthy resume for his accomplishments both athletically and academically that includes three Academic All-Patriot League citations and an NSCAA Scholar All-East First Team honor in 2010. The senior carries a 3.44 GPA as an accounting major and is a five-time selection to the league's Academic Honor Roll.
Powell won the decathlon for the second time in his career at last weekend's Patriot League Championships. He broke his own school record in the process, totaling 6,667 points. His previous league title came in 2010 when he earned the distinction of being Bucknell's first-ever decathlon champion. This spring, Powell also became just the fourth athlete in league history to win the heptathlon and the decathlon at the conference championships in the same season.
Bucknell led all schools with three selections to the Academic All-Patriot League Team. Army, which also earned the Scholar-Athlete of the Year with Thomas Wagner, was the only other school with more than one honoree.
The Bison, who are coming off their third consecutive outdoor conference title, will continue their season today at the IC4A Championships. The meet runs through Sunday.
