LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Coming off its fourth win of the season at Binghamton last week, the Bucknell women's lacrosse team closes out the 2012 campaign with home contests against Colgate on Saturday and Howard on Tuesday. The Colgate game starts at 1 p.m. at Graham Field and will air live on Bison Vision.
The Bison improved to 4-11 on the season with a come-from-behind 16-12 victory at Binghamton last Saturday. Bucknell trailed 5-1 early in the game but pulled even at 7-7 by halftime. The Bison went up by three goals in the second half before the Bearcats rallied to tie it at 12-all. Back-to-back goals by Katelyn Miller, who had four in the game, put Bucknell ahead to stay in the final minutes.
Miller also had an assist for a five-point night, while Arriana Sajjad logged three goals and a helper. Goalie Caroline O'Neill played a big role in the win, as she came on in relief and made seven saves while allowing only six goals in just under 46 minutes of action.
Sajjad (32-8-40) became the first Bison to reach 30 goals and 40 points this season. Miller (29-8-37) ranks just behind in goals and points, followed by Madison Hurwitz (21-15-36), Emily Kookogey (28-6-34), Lindsey Ferro (5-17-22), Ryan Wenk (18-1-19), Sophie Kleinert (13-3-16) and Molly Ford (3-13-16). Blair McDonald (6-1-7) recorded her first two-goal game last week at Binghamton.
While Bucknell is seeking its first Patriot League win of the season, Colgate (5-10, 3-2) has clinched a postseason berth and can claim the No. 2 seed with a victory on Saturday. The Raiders blasted St. Bonaventure 19-8 at home on Wednesday for their second straight win. Colgate secured that PL Tournament spot with a 13-11 win at Lafayette last Saturday. The Raiders also have league wins over Holy Cross (12-11) and Lehigh (13-9) and losses to American (19-18) and Navy (8-6).
Leading scorer Courtney Miller (53-15-68) is red hot. She recorded seven goals and two assists in each of the last two wins over St. Bonaventure and Lafayette. Katie Sullivan (28-15-43), Amanda O'Sullivan (24-4-28) and Alison Flood (22-3-25) have also topped the 20-goal plateau.
The goalies have combined for a .417 save percentage for the Raiders, who allow 12.5 goals per game while scoring 11.3.
Bucknell has won only 3 of 33 prior meetings with Colgate. Bucknell's only series win since 1995 was a big one, a 13-9 decision in the 2003 Patriot League Tournament. Last season, the Raiders scored 15 first-half goals and prevailed 20-7 in Hamilton.
Howard comes to Graham Field on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Bison are 0-10 on the season heading into a Friday-Sunday road trip to Jacksonville and Presbyterian. Courtland Lackey leads the team with 22 goals, while Cynthia Smalls has 26 points on 19 goals and seven assists.
Bucknell is 3-0 all-time against Howard, including a 24-5 rout last season in Washington, D.C. Julia Braun scored six of Bucknell's school-record 24 goals in the game, while Ford added seven points with two goals and five assists. Hurwitz scored four goals, Miller had three goals and three assists, and Ferro tallied three goals and two assists.
