MALIBU, Calif. - Bucknell volleyball did not find the Fall Break finale it was looking for as it fell in three sets to No. 24 Pepperdine at the Firestone Fieldhouse on Monday night. The Bison (6-14) had their hands full with the nationally ranked Wave (12-7), taking a 25-6, 25-14, 25-17 loss.
Bucknell came out on the lower side of attack percentage against a powerful Pepperdine squad. The Bison finished the match at .013, while the Wave hit .439 on the night. The home team was its sharpest in the first set when it hit .550, and it showed in the score. Bucknell worked its way more and more into the contest as the night wore on, however.
By the third set, the Bison were making the Wave sweat a bit and had a 6-1 lead at one point. Pepperdine didn't let things get out of hand, but it did take it some time to take the scoring advantage for good. Karen Campbell (Chesapeake, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) had a kill for 11-11 before Pepperdine started to make its final move. The Bison were still within striking distance at 14-12, but the Wave came at them with seven unanswered points, the final six of which came on kills from three different players.
Bucknell did its best to slow things down late in the set, getting back-to-back service aces from Kebah Edoho (Odenton, Md./Arundel) for 22-16. The effort was not quite enough to turn things back around and the Bison dropped their seventh straight match.
Jessica Serrato (Millbrae, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Prep) had the team high in kills for the second consecutive match. The junior totaled five against Pepperdine. Campbell had four kills and three blocks, while Kat Tauscher (Washington, D.C./National Cathedral School) had 10 assists. Defensively, Katie Price (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) tallied 10 digs.
Lexi Weldon had the match high in kills with eight and Kellie Woolever registered 34 assists. As a team, the Wave had 46 kills and 40 assists, compared to 19 kills and 17 assists for the Bison.
Bucknell will now turn its attention back to Patriot League play as it faces American (Oct. 12) and Navy (Oct. 13) next at Davis Gym.
