LEWISBURG, Pa. - Last weekend did not go as planned as Bucknell tennis had its latest tournament rained out, but the squads are looking to get back on track when they host the Bison Quad at the Varsity Tennis Courts starting on Friday. The Orange and Blue will welcome Colgate, Niagara, Youngstown State and the Bloomsburg men for their final home event of the season. After Friday's first rounds, play will resume at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
In the event of rain, the Bison Quad will move indoors to Gerhard Fieldhouse. Complete draws will be available at the end of each day at BucknellBison.com.
BISON NOTEBOOK
- With bad weather hovering over Washington, D.C., last weekend, the Georgetown Classic became Bucknell's second tournament this fall to be cancelled due to rain. That left Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School (Pa.)) still looking for her 100th career victory. The senior has an overall combined record of 99-66, ranking 10th in program history for overall wins.
- The last time the women's team competed, it was also on their home courts for the Bucknell Invitational. Jen Bush (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Alyssa McAndrew (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) came away with their first career title in doubles, winning Flight B.
- As a team, the Bison women are 17-15 in singles and 8-6 in doubles. Seven different players have each registered two singles wins, while Bush and McAndrew lead the way in doubles with a 4-0 record.
- With Georgetown's tournament cancelled, Bucknell's men's team took advantage of the nearby Bloomsburg Fall Classic to get some more matches under their belt. Octavio Canibe (Spring, Texas/The John Cooper School) and Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss School (Conn.)) both went undefeated in singles. Maxson was also a perfect 2-0 with Chris Tortora (South Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) in doubles. Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) were 3-0 in doubles as were Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK).
- Canibe improved to 7-0 in singles this fall, but it hasn't all been smooth sailing. The freshman needed two super tiebreaks at Bloomsburg to keep his perfect record, the toughest coming against Mary Washington's Kevin Aquino. Canibe defeated Aquino 1-6, 6-3, (17-15) in the second match of the tournament. The Bison rookie is now 3-0 in super tiebreaks this fall.
- With their perfect doubles runs at Bloomsburg, Cohenca, Zimmer, Katten and Morque all moved up the Bucknell record lists. Cohenca is now tied for eighth all-time among Bison with a career mark of 50-38. Katten (38-21) is tied for 17th, and Morque (31-27) and Zimmer (31-19) are tied for 24th.
- Maxson made his own move up the record lists. The senior took over the lead among current Bison for singles victories, improving his career record to 41-25. That ranks 17th in program annals. Maxson's 5-0 weekend also moved him into the top 35 in combined wins. He is now 55-42 overall in his career.
- The Bucknell men are 40-17 (.702) in singles and 18-6 (.750) in doubles as a team this fall.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Bucknell men have one more tournament remaining on their fall schedule. The Bison will travel to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Lehigh Fall Championships Oct. 15-16. The women's team is off until January, however, when they will begin dual play at Penn State.
