LEWISBURG, Pa. - Doug Shribman (Marblehead, Mass./Belmont Hill School), the most decorated power hitter in Bucknell baseball history, has been selected to participate in Saturday's TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby in Omaha, Neb. The event will feature eight of the top home run hitters in the nation and will take place at TD Ameritrade Park at 8:30 p.m. Eastern.
The second annual College Home Run Derby will be televised Sunday, July 3, at 2 p.m. on CBS.
Shribman, the Bucknell and Patriot League all-time home run leader with 43 career round-trippers, will compete against Georgia Southern's Victor Roache, who led the nation with 30 home runs in 2011. Daniel Aldrich (College of Charleston), Andrew Rash (Virginia Tech), Dylan Pratt (East Tennessee State), Joey DiMichele (Arizona State), Connor Harrell (Vanderbilt) and one more yet-to-be-named hitter will round out the eight-person field.
The Derby will also feature three Major League Baseball legends. Joe Carter and Baseball Hall of Fame member Paul Molitor will serve as honorary hitting coaches for Derby participants. In addition, All-Star player Frank Thomas will provide commentary for CBS during the competition.
Tickets for the 2011 TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby, which will include the 27th annual Omaha World-Herald fireworks display, are still available and may be purchased in person from the Qwest Center Omaha arena box offices, by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000 or online at www.collegehomerunderby.com. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to TD Ameritrade's three major charitable giving initiatives: the Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and the United Way.
A three-year starter at first base and a three-time All-Patriot League selection, Shribman graduated from Bucknell last month with his name appearing on 14 program career top-10 lists, including home runs (1st, 43), total bases (1st, 385) and RBIs (2nd, 153).
This past spring Shribman hit .325 with 16 home runs and 49 RBIs. Thirty-two of his team-high 63 hits went for extra bases and he ended the year on an 11-game hitting streak as he earned his second straight First Team All-Patriot League nod.
In 2010, Shribman hit a Bucknell and Patriot League record 21 home runs, eight of which came during the postseason. He earned Patriot League Tournament MVP honors after hitting .423 with seven home runs and 16 RBIs in six games, helping the Bison to their second NCAA Tournament berth in three years.
Shribman began his career as a pitcher and registered just five at bats as a freshman, meaning his impressive offense numbers came in just three years as a regular hitter.
