PRINCETON, N.J. – Bucknell track and field's Laura Rycek (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) and Leonard Joseph (Whitesboro, N.Y./Clinton) earned All-East honors and the Bison qualified for three of tomorrow's finals as competition continued at the IC4A and ECAC Championships at Princeton's Weaver Stadium on Saturday. Among those advancing to Sunday's action was the women's 4x800 relay that also ran the seventh-fastest time in program history.
Rycek earned ECAC All-East honors for the third time in her career with a sixth-place finish in the javelin. The senior, who will now turn her attention to the NCAA Regionals, threw 147 feet, 1 inch. Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) and Kat Folger (Groton, Mass./Bishop Guertin) also competed in the javelin on Saturday, finishing 13th and 20th, respectively.
Joseph's IC4A All-East accolade was the first of his career. The sophomore placed seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 193-9. The distance is the best of his career by eight inches and keeps him in fifth place all-time at Bucknell.
Joseph was not the only Bison to record one of the best marks in program history on Saturday. Competing in the 1,500 meters, Christopher Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) finished in 3 minutes, 50.33 seconds. That is the 10th-fastest mark among the Orange and Blue and makes him the first Bison to join that particular top-10 list since Lou Palma in 2003. In fact, only three Bison have joined the top 10 at 1,500 meters since 1988.
Jennifer Zymet (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) crept even closer to the school record in the 400 meters thanks to Saturday's performance. The freshman ran 55.78 seconds, keeping her second all-time to Yetunde Daniels' 55.08. Zymet, who was 14th in the race, and Daniels are the only two Bison to run the 400 in under 56 seconds.
Three of Zymet's classmates contributed to one of the fastest 4x800 times in program history. Sophomore Caroline Tolli (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) and freshmen Erin Holbrook (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora), Emily Waksmunski (Carrolltown, Pa./Bishop Carroll) and Hana Casalnova (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) won their heat in 8:58.01. The head into tomorrow's final as the second-seeded squad behind Duke.
Also advancing to finals on Sunday are the men's 4x100 relay and Justin Hicks (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) in the 100 meters. Hicks came out of the 100's preliminary heats in fifth with a time of 10.74 seconds. Despite being just one-tenth of a second behind his teammate, Isaih Bell (Stone Mountain, Ga./Clarkston) was 13th in a tightly packed field.
Both Hicks and Bell will move on with Marlon Woods (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) and Kamal Riley (Hyde Park, Mass./Charlestown) as part of the 4x100. The quartet narrowly placed second overall in the prelims with a time of 41.14 seconds. A mere .29 seconds behind the Bison was Patriot League foe Lafayette, but the Leopards were ninth and did not qualify.
Field events begin on the final day of competition at 10 a.m. with the men's high jump and shot put. Running begins at noon with the meet progressing on a rolling schedule due to impending bad weather. Updated time schedules and live results can be found at lancertiming.com.
