LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman golfer Lauren Bernard (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) has been named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week after her outstanding performance last week at the Big South Championship. Bernard finished in a tie for second place, one shot behind the individual winner, and earned All-Big South honors.
The Bucknell women's golf program has been competing in the Big South since 2003, and Bernard's second-place finish was the highest ever for a Bison player at the league championship. She posted rounds of 75-79-72 for a 54-hole total of 226. Jessica Alexander of team champion Coastal Carolina shot 225 and was the only player in the 44-person field to finish ahead of Bernard.
In the third and final round, Bernard made three birdies and three bogeys to finish at even par, a new personal best. Hannah Hellyer of Gardner-Webb also shot 226.
Bernard, whose brother Dan is one of the top players on the Bucknell men's golf team, became the second Bison this year and fifth all-time to earn All-Big South honors. It was previously announced that senior Katie Jurenovich was voted by the coaches as an all-conference member based on accomplishments from the full season. Bernard earned one of the five remaining all-conference honors based on her performance at the championship. Previous Bucknell All-Big South honorees were Lee in 2010 and Amy Loughney in 2005 and 2007.
As a team, the Bison finished a best-ever third in the nine-team field, trailing only Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb.
