FARMVILLE, Va. - Bucknell softball battled in its first of four games at the Longwood Classic at Lancer Field but fell 1-0 to Stony Brook after some late miscues on Saturday morning. The teams entered the seventh inning scoreless, but the Seawolves (1-0) capitalized on a pair of errors to plate their lone run of the game.
Stony Brook's Lauren Maloney reached base on an error by the Bucknell (1-5) first baseman with one out in the top of the seventh. She advanced to second as the Bison committed an error with the very next batter. That brought Bucknell's total of miscues to five in the game and put the Seawolves in scoring position. Maloney eventually scored on a fielder's choice.
With the errors, Bucknell pitcher Alex MacLean (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) got out of the game without allowing an earned run. The sophomore was forced to work throughout the game, however, as the Stony Brook batters were sent down in order just once in the game coming in the third frame. The Seawolves put at least one runner in scoring position in every other inning.
MacLean (1-3) took the loss after allowing eight hits. She also struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Colleen Matthes (1-0) earned the win for Stony Brook in its season opener. The senior allowed only three hits - two to Elyse Colmenero (Fresno, Calif./Central) - and struck out two in her complete game.
Colmenero registered her first multi-hit game of the season. The senior catcher singled in the fourth but with two outs, the Bison were unable to make much of it. Colmenero again threatened in the sixth as she singled down the left field line. That hit also came with two outs, and nothing came of the effort.
Bucknell plays again with an 11 a.m. start vs. Quinnipiac.
