HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison plated 11 runs in its final three at bats to break open a game that was tied 8-8 in the sixth inning and defeated the Bucknell baseball team 19-12 Sunday afternoon in the final contest in a four-game weekend series. A total of 127 runs were scored in the four-game set.
Bob Donato (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) and Doug Shribman (Marblehead, Mass./Belmont Hill School) each hit a home run and drove in three runs apiece and cleanup hitter Scott Reed (Reston, Va./South Lakes) also drove in three runs to lead the Bucknell offense. The Bison recorded 14 hits with David Duffett (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) tallying a team-high three, his second three-hit performance of the weekend.
The Dukes hit three home runs in the game and recorded three extra base hits and drew two walks in an eight-run eighth inning that extended their lead from 11-8 to 19-8.
Shribman, who hit his second home run of the weekend, and the 29th of his career, tied the game at 8-8 with a two-run shot in the top of the sixth. He is now just one home run shy of Andrew Brouse's year-old program record.
Bucknell (0-4) took its first lead of the series in the top of the first inning when Donato led off with a home run and Matt Lamore (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) later drew a bases-loaded walk. However, James Madison answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame off starter Jack Boehm (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier).
The score remained tied at 2-2 until the bottom of the third when the Dukes plated four runs, two coming on the fourth home run of the weekend by Matt Tenaglia.
The Bison came back to tie the score with three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more on Shribman's homer in the sixth.
Bucknell will head south again next weekend when it plays a three-game set at Richmond Friday-Sunday, Feb. 25-27.
