LEWISBURG, Pa. - A pin by Derek Reber (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) and decisions by Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon) and Corey Lear (Orangeville, Pa./Benton Area) helped the Bucknell wrestling team to a 12-10 lead, but Edinboro won the final four bouts, including two for bonus points, as the Bison lost to the Fighting Scots, 26-12, Saturday morning at the Virginia Duals. Bucknell (3-6) finished the two-day event with a 1-2 mark, while Edinboro (3-6-1) advanced to the consolation bracket semifinals to face Virginia.
LeValley, who defeated a pair of ranked opponents on Friday when Bucknell split matches against No. 15 Wyoming (L, 19-16) and UNC Greensboro (W, 21-17), upended another ranked foe on Saturday as he defeated No. 14 Torsten Gillespie, 8-2, at 149 pounds. The No. 4-ranked LeValley also defeated Gillespie, 6-0, at the NWCA All-Star Classic this past November.
With the win over Gillespie, LeValley kept his record unblemished this season at 18-0. He has now gone a full calendar year without losing a regular-season bout. The Colorado native also improved to 6-0 against ranked opponents this year. LeValley also moved into a tie with current Bison assistant coach David Marble for third place all-time at Bucknell with 111 career victories.
The 125-pound Reber, who missed all of last year with a knee injury and is still rounding back into form, started the match well for the Bison as he needed just 33 seconds to pin Bijan Banks and give Bucknell an early 6-0 advantage. It was the first pin for Reber since his season-opening bout at the Michigan State Open. He is now 11-7 this year, including 5-4 in duals.
Lear's 7-0 decision over Ethan Saylor at 165 gave the Bison the lead at 12-10. However, it was the final victory for Bucknell. Lear finished the Virginia Duals with a 2-1 record and is now 17-6 this season.
The 16-team bracketed Virginia Duals will conclude Saturday evening. Penn State, Kent State, Michigan and Lehigh advanced to the semifinals on Friday and were still alive for the championship.
Bucknell will return to action Friday when it wrestles at EIWA opponent Rutgers at 7 p.m. The next day the Bison will take on Maryland in Hummelstown, Pa., at 7 p.m.
