LEWISBURG, Pa. -- A week removed from a thrilling one-shot victory at the season-opening Bucknell Invitational, the Bison men's golf team heads back to central New York this weekend for the Cornell Invitational. The 12-team, 54-hole tournament starts runs Saturday and Sunday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course.
Last year's Cornell Invitational was shortened to 36 holes due to rain, and the Bison boasted the top two individual finishers in Brian Bartow (74-69) and Andrew Cohen (76-69). As a team, Bucknell finished second to Binghamton by seven strokes.
Bartow and Cohen have both graduated, and coach Jim Cotner will bring a much younger lineup to Ithaca this weekend. Bucknell's five-man team will consist of a freshman, three sophomores and a junior.
The eldest of the group is Will Bachman, who is off to a strong start in 2010-11. Bachman tied the school record with a 6-under-par final round (66) in a fourth-place finish at the Colgate Invitational to start the year, and he shot 72-74-75 last week in a T-9th finish at the Bucknell Invitational.
Sophomore Jon Hartman is coming off the team's best week, when he posted 77-68-69 to finish second at the Bucknell Invitational. He played the final 36 holes in 3-under par, a nice season debut after missing all of last spring with a shoulder injury. Sophomores Dan Bernard (75-72-74) and J.J. Szmadzinski (72-75-74) both shot 221 last week to finish in the top 10.
Heralded freshman Schuyler Stitzer makes his first collegiate road trip this week after producing rounds of 75-73-76 at Bucknell's home tournament last weekend.
Joining Bucknell in the field this week will be host Cornell along with Binghamton, Columbia, Canisius, Colgate, Fordham, Lafayette, Ottawa, Rider, St. Bonaventure and Siena. The teams will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 Sunday.
