LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week after a career performance at the Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Championships last weekend. The sophomore was named the Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet after leading the Bison to their first team title since 1991 on Saturday.
Arent began his championship push with a third-place finish in the 110 high hurdles, clocking the third-fastest time in Bucknell history. His time of 14.45 seconds bettered his mark of 14.53 in the prelims, which had also been a career-best until he reached the finals.
Less than two hours later, Arent won the 400 meters and the 400 intermediate hurdles. His 400 meter time of 48.12 seconds was also one of the best in program history. After not even being ranked in Bucknell's top-10 in the event, Arent jumped all the way to fifth all-time. In the 400 hurdles, Arent finished in 52.80, less than one second off his personal best. He also became the first athlete in Patriot League history to win the open 400 and 400 hurdles in the same meet.
As if that weren't enough, Arent capped off his day by anchoring the 4x400 relay in a crucial race. Bucknell held just a five point lead over Army in the team standings heading into the championship meet's final event. Arent guaranteed the Bison a second-place finish, putting the team ahead of the Black Knights by a mere three points at the meet's end for its first league championship in 19 years. The relay crossed the line in 3:13.66, moving into second place in the program record books and giving Arent his fourth IC4A-qualifying standard of the weekend.
Arent became one of several Bison to claim major awards following the Championships. Joining him on the men's side were Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) as the Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet and Kevin Donner as the Coach of the Year.
Arent will continue his season at the IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J., May 15-16.
