LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior second baseman Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) was named the Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. The third Bison to win the award this season, Yoder scored the game-winning run in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Navy and then his fourth-inning home run accounted for the only run in game one of Sunday's doubleheader against the Mids. Overall, Yoder led Bucknell to a 3-1 series victory over Navy.
Yoder claimed his second career Player of the Week citation after hitting .462 with one home run, six RBIs, two doubles and three runs scored in four games last week. He posted a pair of multi-hit games and drove in at least one run in each contest. The left-handed hitter now owns a team-high seven-game hitting streak.
Yoder had a big hand in two of Bucknell's three wins against Navy. The Bison posted a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Mids with a four-run seventh inning in game one on Saturday. Yoder's two-run double tied the score at 4-4 and he scored the winning run on a single by Drew Constable.
Twenty-four hours later Yoder hit a solo home run over the right field wall at Depew Field accounting for the only run in a 1-0 win. He reached base twice against Navy's Ben Nelson, who was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday. Nelson allowed just four baserunners in the seven-inning game.
Yoder, who ranks eighth in program history with 104 RBIs, is second on the team with 31 runs driven in this year. He is leading the squad and the Patriot League with a career-best .419 batting average. Additionally, his eight home runs are a career high and place him tied for second in the league with teammate Doug Shribman, behind only teammate Andrew Brouse.
In addition to his offensive output, Yoder has been strong defensively this year at second base. He made three errors in the third game of the year on a high school field against VMI, but has committed just one since then. He has played 10 straight errorless games.
Bucknell (17-23, 6-6 PL) will be back in action Tuesday with a doubleheader at St. Bonaventure. On Wednesday the Bison will host Maryland Eastern Shore at Depew Field at 3:30 p.m.
