Bucknell Baseball Notebook (3-4, 0-0 PL)
Bucknell is coming off a four-game series at Old Dominion where it hit .370, scored 38 runs and pounded out 60 hits, 11 of which went for extra bases. Ben Allen (10-for-20) and B.J. LaRosa (8-for-15) each hit at least .500 during the series.
Bucknell is expected to start Trey Frahler (Friday), Dylan Seeley (Saturday) and Jack Boehm (Sunday) this weekend. Those three right-handers have combined for six starts, 27.1 innings, 23 strikeouts and seven walks this season.
Bucknell posted just five saves all last year and already has two this season. Senior Andrew Clarke picked up his first career save in Sunday's 7-4 victory at Old Dominion, while junior transfer Steve Carlin earned his first save by pitching the final 1.2 innings of the first game of Saturday's doubleheader victory.
Despite it being early in the season, Bucknell has fielded the ball well. The Bison own a fielding percentage of .970. Last year Bucknell finished the campaign with a .959 fielding percentage. The program record for fielding percentage is .960, which was established in 2001.
Ben Yoder was second on the team with seven home runs a year ago. He is on his way to being one of the team leaders in that category once again with two last weekend at Old Dominion. He now has 10 in his career, putting him six shy of 10th place on the program's all-time list. Andrew Brouse has 14 round-trippers in his career, most among current Bison.
Bucknell's pitchers have nearly a 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (47-to-24) this year. Last year, the staff had 213 strikeouts and 191 walks.
Bucknell's current three-game winning streak is its first since it claimed the final two games of the regular season last April at Lehigh and then won its first Patriot League Tournament contest against Lafayette. The Bison had three winning streaks of at least three games last year. They never won more than four in a row.
With 13 hits this season, Ben Allen has climbed into ninth place on the Bison career list with 156. His 110 career runs rank eighth in program history, while his 474 at bats stand 10th.
Doug Shribman, B.J. LaRosa and Ben Yoder each enter this weekend with six-game hitting streaks intact. Shribman has hit in 24 of his last 25 games dating back to last season. Ben Allen is one of three Bison with a four-game hitting streak and he has hit in 20 of his last 21 games dating back to 2009.
Ben Allen has made 90 consecutive starts at shortstop for the Bison.
Senior Andrew Clarke has pitched 7.1 scoreless innings of relief this season, yielding just three hits in the process. He entered this year with a 10.90 career ERA, but has seen that figure plummet to 9.00.
Bucknell's bullpen has yielded just 12 earned runs in 26.2 innings of work this season (4.00 ERA).
Bucknell's pinch hitters have been successful this year, combining to go 5-for-6. Both freshman Travis Clark and sophomore Scott Reed are 2-for-2. The Bison had just 13 pinch hits (in 53 at bats) all last year and no player had more than two.
