LEWISBURG, Pa. - Nine Bucknell student-athletes, representing five varsity sports programs, and three Bison head coaches visited first-grade classes at Kelly Elementary School on Friday as part of the Bucknell department of athletics and recreation's youth literacy campaign.
The Bison student-athletes and coaches are promoting their "Read Like a Champion" initiative to local youths. The Bison student-athletes and coaches read the children's books "Winners Never Quit" by Mia Hamm and "Stand Tall Molly Lou Mellon" by Patty Lovell to the classes. At the end of the session, the student-athletes and coaches donated the books to the classrooms.
The first graders also enjoyed a visit from Bucky Bison. The popular Bison mascot was a hit with the students throughout the program.
The student-athletes who participated in the "Read Like a Champion" program were Lauren Wiemken from women's track & field/cross country; Lindsay Horbatuck and Joyce Novacek from women's basketball; Allie Mongan from women's lacrosse; Laura Twichell and Megan Mongan from women's swimming & diving and Allison Martens and Kim Weaver from women's rowing. Allison FitzPatrick of the women's swimming & diving team took photos of the visit, while head coaches Joe Susan (football), Ben Landis (women's soccer) and Dave Paulsen (men's basketball) were on hand to read to the classes.
This is the second consecutive year Bucknell has sent a group to Kelly Elementary School to read to classes as part of the "Read Like a Champion" program. Bison student-athletes and staff members will read to local elementary students on a number of occasions throughout the year.
