HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Bucknell men' tennis continued its struggles, taking a 4-3 loss to Denison in Hilton Head, S.C., on Monday afternoon. The Bison (1-8) pushed two doubles matches to 9-7 and forced a third set in four singles contests but despite the close play, were unable to pull out their second win of the season.
Claiming the points for Bucknell were Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) at third singles, Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) at the fourth position and Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) at the No. 6 spot. Morque earned his first singles victory of the season against Nate Hobrath although he got off to a bit of a rocky start. The Bison freshman dropped the opening set 6-2 before bouncing back in the second for 6-4. A third-set super tiebreaker went easily to Morque, 10-4.
Maxson also was forced to go the distance in his match against the Big Red's Tim Martin. The sophomore battled through three very close sets, winning the first 7-5 but dropping the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6. Maxson finally pulled out the victory for the Bison in the third, 10-8.
Katten took a much smoother road to his win over Evan Verbofsky. The Bison freshman sailed to a 6-3, 6-4 win for his second singles victory of the spring season.
Morque and Maxson were not the only Bucknellians to challenge their Denison opponents, as Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) was involved in two very tight matches. The junior opened at No. 1 doubles with Morque, but the duo fell 9-7 to Hobrath and Matt McErlean. Kovic then went three sets against McErlean at second singles. McErlean came out on top in that match as well, 6-7, 7-5, 11-9.
Katten and Clark Bogle (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) also pushed their No. 3 doubles match to 9-7, but lost to Tom Cawood and Verbofsky.
Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) and Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) won their doubles match, defeating Jared Connolly and Tim Martin, 8-3.
Bucknell will continue its Spring Break trip in Hilton Head on Wednesday with an early morning match against North Georgia. The Bison will take on the Saints at 8 a.m. before heading back north for Villanova on Saturday, March 20.
