NORFOLK, Va. - Andrew Brouse (Kreamer, Pa./Midd-West) and Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) both hit home runs and Bucknell received a solid pitching performance as it defeated Old Dominion 7-4 Sunday afternoon at Bud Metheny Complex. It was the third straight victory for the Bison, who went 3-1 during the four-game weekend series.
Yoder homered for the second consecutive day with a two-run shot in the fourth, while Brouse, who hit a team-high 10 home runs last year, smashed his in the third. Brouse now has 14 career home runs, two shy of 10th place in program history.
B.J. LaRosa (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) had three hits in the first four innings and finished the game 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. He scored on Brouse's home run and on a Drew Constable (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) sacrifice fly in the fourth. He is now hitting a robust .520 on the season. The top four hitters in the Bison lineup - Ben Allen (Port Royal, Pa./Juniata), Yoder, LaRosa and Brouse - accounted for nine of Bucknell's 14 hits in the contest.
The Bison bullpen has been solid all season and Sunday was no exception. Relievers Marcus Garone (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey), Michael Dallanegra (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Andrew Clarke (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery) combined to pitch 3.1 innings and they yielded just four hits and two runs, only one of which was earned. Clarke pitched the final 1.1 innings for his first career save. He retired all four hitters he faced and has now pitched 7.1 innings without allowing a run this season.
Jack Boehm (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) started for the Bison and picked up his first career win. He hurled 5.2 innings, scattered eight hits and was touched for just two runs on a double by Cameron Scott in the second inning.
Bucknell scored all seven of its run in the first four innings off starter Chris Boggs (0-2). Eleven of the Bison's 14 hits came off Boggs. Brandon Smith and Phil McCarthy limited Bucknell to three hits and three walks over the final 5.2 innings.
LaRosa, Yoder and Doug Shribman (Marblehead, Mass./Belmont Hill School) each extended his hitting streak to six games. Allen, Scott Reed (Reston, Va./South Lakes) and David Duffett (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) each own four-game hitting streaks.
Bucknell, which is in the midst of its first three-game winning streak since claiming the first three contests in a four-game series at Holy Cross last April, will travel to Elon, N.C., next weekend. The Bison will play Elon, Radford and Princeton on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
