LEWISBURG, Pa. - Days after the 2010-11 season debut, Bucknell Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) was named the Patriot League Male Track Athlete of the Week and the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. The junior's honors came on the heels of a pair of victories and one of the best 60 meter hurdle times in program history at Saturday's Bison Opener.
Arent started his junior campaign with a second-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles. His prelim time of 8.29 seconds was a career best and fast enough to tie him with the second-fastest all-time mark at Bucknell. He soon took sole possession of the number-two time, crossing the line in 8.21 in the finals. It also gave him the IC4A-qualifying standard.
Later in the day, Arent added gold medals in the 400 meters and as the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay. With an open 400 time of 49.53, Arent was the only runner to finish in under 50 seconds. His relay team, which also included Jordan Donaldson (Saxton, Pa./Tussey Mountain), Justin Hicks (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) and John Picardo (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton Central), clocked in at 3:20.81.
Arent has earned a number of other program top-10 marks during his indoor trak career. In addition to his new best time in the 60 hurdles, he ranks second in the 400 (48.04), fourth in the 300 meters (35.84) and 10th in the 500 (1:05.28). He is also among the top 10 as a member of two 4x400 relays and a 4x55 shuttle hurdle relay.
The league award is the first of the season for a Bison and the first of Arent's career. It is the second time in his career Arent has been named the Bison Athlete of the Week.
The awards have been streaming in for Arent, who was recognized as the Patriot League Championships Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet last spring after winning the 400 meters and 400 hurdles, and anchoring the second-place 4x400 relay that clinched the team title for Bucknell. He is also a five-time all-league performer.
Bucknell will have a lengthy break before it returns to the track. The Bison will next host the Gulden Relays at Gerhard Fieldhouse on Jan. 8, 2011.
