LEWISBURG, Pa. - It was a night for the veterans at Bucknell wrestling's intrasquad match Tuesday inside Davis Gym. Four of the team's five seniors as well as a pair of juniors posted victories as the Blue team defeated the Orange squad 26-11. Highlighting the match were wins by All-American Kevin LeValley at 149 pounds and sophomore Lewisburg native Derek Reber at 125 pounds.
LeValley - who faced classmate Scott Sechler - Brantley Hooks, Rob Waltko and Jay Hahn were the four seniors who earned victories on Tuesday. Juniors Adam Healey and David Thompson, who missed the second half of last year, also were victorious by decision.
The match started at 197 pounds, circled back to 125 and worked its way back up to heavyweight. This enabled freshman Austin Fallon to compete at both 197 and heavyweight. He lost by major decision to Hahn in the opening bout while a member of the Orange team, but concluded the match with a 6-3 decision at heavyweight over Conor Sweeney.
The Blue squad jumped out to an early 14-0 lead behind Hahn's major decision, a Reber pin and a major decision by freshman Alex Pelliccotti at 133 pounds. Reber's pin came with seconds left in the second period after he had already built a 9-2 lead over freshman Bob Hauser.
Healey got the Orange team on the board with a 6-3 decision against rookie Eric Harris at 141, while LeValley brought the score to 14-8 with a 19-4 tech fall victory against Sechler. LeValley scored the first nine points in the bout and led 13-2 after two periods against Sechler, who usually wrestles in a heavier weight class.
Consecutive decisions by Thompson, Waltko and Fallon to end the match gave the Blue team its final 15-point margin of victory as it did not allow Orange to get closer than six points.
Overall, Blue captured seven of the 10 bouts. Sophomore Corey Lear joined Healey and LeValley in the win column for Orange.
Overall, 11 of the 19 wrestlers that competed on Tuesday were freshmen and sophomores. Those two classes combined to go 4-8 during the match, while the juniors and seniors were 6-2.
