LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell volleyball's Rachel Rodriguez (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) earned her second academic honor of the season, being named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team, it was announced on Wednesday. The senior accounting major has a 3.98 cumulative grade-point average in the classroom and leads the Bison with 485 assists on the court.
Consistently among the Patriot League's top student-athletes, Rodriguez has posted a perfect 4.0 GPA four out of six semesters at Bucknell. In addition to being a six-time Bucknell Dean's List and three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, the setter recently became the league's only ESPN Academic All-District selection, earning a spot on the first team. Rodriguez is also a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society.
Out of the classroom, Rodriguez has participated in several internships and shadow/participant programs. Last summer she worked in the Assurance line of service with PricewaterhouseCoopers, leading to a full-time position that she will fill following graduation. Her resume also includes time in the finance department of the Sherwin-Williams company and in advertising, marketing and public relations at Hitchcock, Fleming & Associates. Rodriguez also spends considerable time volunteering with the Bison at the Lewisburg Food Bank or helping to build care packages for U.S. troops serving overseas.
On the court, the co-captain has set personal records in several categories this year, including assists, service aces (28), kills (19) and blocks (9). Her aces total as well as her 181 digs this fall both rank second on the squad. Rodriguez' performance throughout the season has led to a handful of awards, including the Patriot League Player of the Week and Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week on Oct. 10 after posting a career-best 43 assists in Bucknell's five-set win over Colgate.
The Academic All-Patriot League Team has been added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The volleyball team has seven student-athletes to equal the size of the sport's All-Patriot League first team. Student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter or a key reserve. Award winners are determined by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
Rodriguez played an integral role in leading the Bison back to the Patriot League Tournament this year. The Orange and Blue will open at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20 when they take on top-seeded American in Washington, D.C.
