WEST POINT, N.Y. - Heidi Kamp (Eugene, Ore./Henry D. Sheldon) and Ragin Jackson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) tied for the team high in kills, and Kamp had a hand in all of the Bison's blocks, but the senior's performance was not enough to keep Bucknell volleyball from falling in straight sets (25-21, 25-16, 25-16) to Army at Gillis Field House on Friday night. Kamp finished the night with seven kills and four blocks as the Bison (6-12, 4-2) dropped their first match in five tries.
Much like she did against Colgate last week when she closed with a career-best 22 kills, Kamp tried to kick off the offense against Army (12-10, 5-1). Kamp's kill made it 1-0, but the Black Knights held the Bison playmakers at bay. No single player recorded more than three kills in any set on the night, and Bucknell was limited to just four total team blocks.
After losing the first set 25-21, Bucknell tried to get an early hold of the second. Kamp and Kyleigh McAhren (Napa, Calif./Justin-Siena) each turned in a kill, and Emily Sawanobori (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) served a pair of aces to give the Bison a 5-2 lead. Army responded by taking five of the next six points, however, and reclaimed the lead for good.
Bucknell struggled to string together consecutive points, and Army soon had set point. Rachel Rodriguez (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Kamp delayed the end with the Bison's first block of the night before Amanda Rowell closed the set at 25-16 with a kill.
The final set went in a similar direction with Bucknell jumping out quickly. Kamp and Katie Baumgarten (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena)gave the Bison a 7-1 advantage as both recorded a kill in the early goings. The duo also teamed up twice for blocks, forcing Army into a timeout.
Army finished with 12 kills and three service aces down the stretch, giving it its second straight set by a score of 25-16.
Adding to Kamp's and Jackson's seven kills were five apiece from McAhren and Baumgarten. Rodriguez led the squad with 14 assists, while Leylin Marroquin (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch) finished with 10 digs.
Army's Francine Vasquez led all players with 13 kills. She was joined in double figures by Ariana Mankus, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Year, who finished with 10. Karyn Powell chipped in 38 assists, and Brittany Jensen tallied a dozen digs.
Bucknell will be back on the court tomorrow for a 4 p.m. matchup with Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
