LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's track and field opened competition with some strong finishes at the Bison Open & Multi and the Penn State National Invitational on Friday. The Bison claimed a handful of top-10 finishes at both meets, including seven top-three finishes at their home meet.
Sean Coyne (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) and Dan Mularz (Englishtown, N.J./Freehold Township) finished second and third, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles at the Bison Open & Multi. With a time of 8.49 seconds, Coyne edged out his teammate by less than two-hundredths of a second.
Also earning second place was Timothy Medlock (Evan Mills, N.Y./Indian River) in the shot put (51 feet, 3 1/2 inches) and Daniel Markwalter (Vienna, Va./Thomas Jefferson S&T) in the pole vault (14-9). Baron Willeford (New Orleans, La./Columbia Prep (N.Y.)) took third in the 5000 meters to lead a group of five Bison, while Zachary Shapiro (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) continued Bucknell's success in the shot put with a third place of his own (50-0 1/2). Shapiro's mark was a personal best and moves him into eighth all-time in program history.
Kevin McGoldrick (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) was the top finisher for the Bison at the Penn State National Invitational. The senior co-captain was fourth overall in the 5000 meters, crossing the line in 15 minutes, 12.14 seconds. In the invitational 5000 meters, Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Dummer) finished ninth (14:39.54) and qualified for the IC4A Championships.
Isaih Bell (Stone Mountain, Ga./Clarkston) saw his share of success at a much shorter distance. The junior qualified for the 60-meter final after running a time of 6.88 seconds to place seventh in the semis. He eventually finished fifth overall in 6.89. Bell met the IC4A-qualifying mark in each round of the 60.
Just as the Orange and Blue dominated in the throws at their home meet, the throwers put up some solid marks at Penn State. Jonathan Lockhart (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) was fifth in the weight throw (50-2 3/4), followed by Tom Barr (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College HS) in 10th (48-8 3/4).
Complete results for the Bison Open & Multi will be available Saturday at BucknellBison.com. Both meets continue Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
