Bucknell Volleyball Travels to Marist for Volley in the Valley

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell volleyball continues on its trip through New York as it travels to Poughkeepsie for Marist's Volley in the Valley this weekend. The Bison (2-1) will face the host Red Foxes at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, followed by Bryant at 4:30 p.m. the same day. The early-season tournament wraps up on Sunday with an 11 a.m. meeting with Providence. Live stats for every match will be available on GameTracker.
ABOUT THE BISON
- Bucknell opened its season last weekend at the St. Francis (N.Y.) Invitational, going 2-1 against St. Peter's, St. Francis and NJIT. The Bison defeated the Peahens 3-0 on Friday before splitting their contests on Saturday with the Terriers, a 3-2 victory, and the Highlanders, a 3-0 loss.
- By defeating St. Peter's and St. Francis, Bucknell won its first two matches of the season for the first time since the 1999 squad beat Wagner, Fairleigh Dickinson and Marist in its season openers.
- The Bison hit another milestone with their win over St. Francis. With the victory, the Bison earned their 400th game in program history. Bucknell is now 400-489-1 all-time.
- Emily Sawanobori (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) was named a St. Francis All-Tournament Team selection as well as the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week following her performance in New York. The sophomore libero recorded 58 digs (5.3/set) and 10 service aces (.91/set) on the weekend.
- Kaitlin Segal (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) started the 2009 season the way she ended 2008 by leading the team in kills. Through the team's first three matches, the junior outside hitter has 34 kills (3.09/set). She is also second on the squad in digs with 32 (2.91/set)
- Ragin Jackson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick-Hudson) started her collegiate career on a strong note. The freshman is leading the team in total blocks with 13 (1.18/set) and block solos with four. She also leads the freshmen with 22 kills (2.00/set).
ABOUT THE RED FOXES
- The Bison have met Marist eight times in program history and have defeated them on each occasion. The two last played in 2000 in Bucknell's Davis Gym, with the Orange and Blue taking the match in straight sets.
- Marist is 2-2 this season after opening the year with losses to Kennesaw State and Toledo. The Red Foxes bounced back for consecutive wins against Bryant and Hartford.
- Leading Marist's attack is junior outside hitter Joanna Foss with 50 kills (3.33/set) and junior middle blocker Lindsey Schmid with 45 (3.00/set). Senior outside hitter Alexandra Schultze also has 35 kills (3.18/set) through the beginning of 2009. On the setting front, senior Dawn Jan already has amassed156 assists (10.40/set), while no other Red Fox has more than six.
- Defensively for the Red Foxes, junior libero Emily Brosky has posted 63 digs (4.50/set) on the year.
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
- This is the first meeting between Bucknell and Bryant. - Bryant is 0-3 this season after taking losses to Toledo, Kennesaw State and Marist at the Toledo Tournament last weekend.
- Sophomores Maria Scocca and Jazmin Stoner each has 26 kills (2.60/set) through their first three contests. Senior Julie Geonnotti leads the team in assists with 61 (6.10/set).
- Scocca is also the Bulldogs' top blocker with 12 total blocks (1.20/set).
ABOUT THE FRIARS
- Bucknell is 2-4 all-time against Providence after winning each of their last two meetings. The Bison won 3-1 in 2002 and 3-0 in 2005.
- Providence enters the weekend with a 2-2 record. The Friars dropped their first two matches of the season to Hartford and Niagara. They then won their next two against Coppin State and Holy Cross.
- The Friars' statistical leaders include senior outside hitter Abby Majewski with 38 kills (2.53/set) and Carly Morrison with 106 assists (7.07/set).
- Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher leads the team defensively with 19 blocks (1.27/set).

The Bison continue their road schedule next weekend with another tournament Friday, Sept. 11 and Saturday, Sept. 12. Bucknell takes on West Virginia and Akron on day one of the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio, followed by Saint Francis (Pa.) on day two.
