BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Sophomore Ben Mattingly (Fishers, Ind./Park Tudor) turned in Bucknell's best round of the tournament on Saturday, a 2-over-par 74, to lead the Bison on the final day of the NCAA Central Regional at The Club at Olde Stone. As a team, Bucknell also posted its best round of the week with a 316, and the Bison finished in 14th place.
Mattingly had three birdies and 12 pars in a round that contained only three mistakes. He made two double bogeys and one bogey, while posting birdies on holes 3, 6 and 14. Mattingly's 54-hole total of 232 was the best on the team and put him in a tie for 55th place in the 75-player field.
Also for the Bison, junior Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck) made 12 pars and six bogeys and finished his tournament with a 78. Junior Ryan Schneiter (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) improved in each round and finished up with an 80. Sophomore Andrew Wallish (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) shot 84 on Saturday. In a surprising development, the Bison did not use the score of their No. 1 player, junior Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), who struggled in the final round and carded an 85. Cohen was coming off a 75 in the second round, which finished up Saturday morning after play was suspended after two weather delays on Friday. There was also a 34-minute lightning delay in the final round.
UCLA came from way behind to defeat top-seeded Washington for the team title. UCLA, which trailed by seven strokes at the start of the day, shot 282 while the Huskies posted a 300. The Bruins were 1-under 863 for the tournament, while Washington was second at 870. Both teams will advance to the NCAA finals, as will Ohio State (880), Georgia Tech (880) and Duke (881). Louisville, Ole Miss and North Carolina State all tied for sixth, missing the the top five and the right to advance by four shots. Bucknell totaled 952, four shots behind 13th-place Austin Peay.
Matt Hill of N.C. State shot 70-71-71 and won the individual title by one shot over Washington's Nick Taylor. Hill qualifies for the NCAA Final as an individual. Taylor led after each of the first two rounds after opening with 67-70, but he shot 76 on Sunday. Three other players finished at 2-under and another at 1-under. Erik Flores of UCLA, had the best round of the day, a 4-under 68.
After winning the Patriot League Championship two weeks ago, Bucknell was appearing in the NCAA regionals for the third time in the last four years.
