LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell wrestlers Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon) and David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Central) competed at the ASICS University National Freestyle Championships in Akron, Ohio, this past weekend and both took home second-place trophies. Additionally, LeValley earned a spot in the Senior Level World Team Trials, which will be held May 30-31 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Competing as members of the Bison Wrestling Club, both LeValley and Marble posted 5-1 records at the two-day event. It is the second straight year LeValley and Marble have finished second in their weight classes.
Wrestling in the 66-kilogram (145.5 pounds) bracket, LeValley posted three of his five wins before reaching the deciding third period. In fact, in those three two-period wins, LeValley did not allow his opponent to score a point. In the championship bout against Mario Mason, LeValley lost by a slim 1-0, 1-0 margin.
Marble competed in the 63-kilogram (138.6 pounds) weight class and won his first five matches without having to go to a third period. He opened with a pin in 1:31 against Josh Straight of the Bronco Wrestling Club. He later advanced to the championship match with a 6-0, 9-2 technical fall victory over Jayk Cobbs of Duquesne. Against Ohio State's Reece Humphrey in the title bout, Marble won the first period 1-0, but then lost the second and third by 6-0, 6-1 scores to place second in the 47-person bracket.
LeValley, a sophomore in 2008-09, and Marble, a junior, were two of Bucknell's record six NCAA qualifiers this past year when the Bison tied for 29th at the NCAA Championships and has their first All-American (Andy Rendos) since 1995. Marble is a three-time NCAA qualifier, while LeValley participated in his first NCAA Championships.
