OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Junior Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamoroneck) earned individual co-champion honors by shooting a 1-under-par 141 at the Caves Valley Intercollegiate, which wrapped up Sunday afternoon at the highly regarded Caves Valley Golf Club. Cohen shot a 1-under 70 on Saturday and an even-par 71 in the final round to help Bucknell to a sixth-place finish.
The Bison got out to a tough start, as none of the other four players could muster anything better than 81 in support of Cohen's strong opening round. But after posting a first-round 319, Bucknell bounced back on Sunday with a 296, the second-best score in the field. Harvard edged George Washington to win the team title.
In addition to Cohen's 71, freshman Will Bachman (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) fired a 72, Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck) shot 75 and Ben Mattingly (Fishers, Ind./Park Tudor) posted a 78.
Cohen finished in a tie for first with George Washington's Brandon Barrack. Down the stretch Cohen made birdies on the 14th and 17th holes, then had a great up-and-down from the front bunker on the 495-yard, par-4 finishing hole.
Bucknell also sent a second set of five players to the Navy Spring Invitational over the weekend. That group shot 313-316 and finished in 15th place. Parker Phillips (Laguna Beach, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal) and Patrick Morsches (Alpharetta, Ga./Marist School) both shot 155 to lead the Bison. Morsches shot 74-81, while Phillips had 77-78. Johnson & Wales won the tournament by four shots over Binghamton.
The Bison will be back in action on Apr. 25-26 at the Patriot League Championship, hosted by Army at the West Point Golf Club.
