LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team is on a hot streak, winning four straight with a score of 7-0. The Bison turned back Fairleigh Dickinson Wednesday in Gerhard Fieldhouse, bringing their record up to 11-5 on the season, as the Knights fall to 3-9.
The Bison got wins in doubles and singles from junior Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy), who won in the first flight of singles, beating Julija Korshunova 6-1, 6-1, and teaming up with junior Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) for a victory at No. 1 doubles 8-1 over Julia Prantl and Ksenia Chernyshova. The Bison pairing of Varela and Calcaterra has not lost a doubles competition this spring (6-0), but this was their first in the one-spot.
Sophomores Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School For Girls) and Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), as well as seniors Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown High School) all picked up singles wins for the Bison. Bucknell won by default at No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles.
With this victory, the Bison guarantee a winning regular season with five contests remaining this spring. The win also ties last season as the most wins in Coach Rebecca Helt's seven seasons as head coach.
The Bison will be back in action against Colgate, in Hamilton, N.Y., on Saturday, April 4, at 2 p.m.
