WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Andrew Brouse (Kreamer, Pa./Midd-West) went 4-for-4 with a two-run home run and reached base five times and Trey Frahler (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) worked into the seventh inning without allowing a run as the Bucknell baseball team opened its Spring Break trip to Florida with a 6-2 victory over Miami (Ohio) Sunday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park, the former spring training home of the Cleveland Indians. It was the first win of the season for the Bison, who improved to 1-7.
Brouse combined with Dane Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg), who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, on nearly half of Bucknell's season-high 15 hits. Seven of the nine Bucknell starters collected at least one hit and five posted multiple-hit days. Brouse, who is the only Bucknell player with a home run this season, now has two thanks to a deep line shot over the left field wall in the fourth inning that gave the Bison a 4-0 cushion.
Frahler, last week's Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, was strong all day as he worked into the seventh inning without allowing a run. He exited the game in favor of Chris Yamaguchi (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) with two runners on base. Both ended up scoring. Frahler limited the Red Hawks to just five hits and those two runs in his six-plus innings of work. He also struck out five, vaulting his team-leading total to 11.
Yamaguchi, who earned his first career save, was solid in relief over the final three innings. He yielded a sacrifice fly and an RBI double in the seventh, allowing both inherited runners to score. However, he retired six of the final seven hitters he faced and the only one that reached was erased on a double play.
Bucknell got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when B.J. LaRosa (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) had a hard two-run single through the right side. Back-to-back two-out singles by Grandizio and Brouse, followed by Doug Shribman (Marblehead, Mass./Belmont Hill) getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases.
After Brouses's home run in the fourth put the Bison up 4-0, they extended the lead with an unearned run in the fifth. Brouse smashed a hard single to center that was misplayed by the center fielder, allowing Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) to score from first.
In the seventh, Ben Allen (Port Royal, Pa./Juniata), Yoder, Grandizio and Brouse hit consecutive singles, two of which the Miami (Ohio) (3-4) outfielders lost in the sun. Grandizio's scored Allen with Bucknell's final run and helped the Bison keep a heft lead after Miami had plated two runs in the top half of the inning.
With a 2-for-5 day, Allen extended his hitting streak to seven games. It was also the team-high fifth multiple-hit game for the junior, who is leading the team in hitting this year with a .382 average.
Bucknell's win was the 499th in the career of head coach Gene Depew. Depew owns an overall record of 499-579-7 and is in his 28th season at the helm of the Bison.
Bucknell will play the second of its seven games in Florida on Monday at 12:30 p.m. against Bowling Green.
