LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bison men's golf team gets a busy spring season underway on Friday when it begins play at the George Washington Golf Invitational at Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club in Bethany Beach, Del. The two-day event consists of 36 holes on Friday and 18 more on Saturday, then the Bison will travel to Williamsburg, Va., for the First Market Bank Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday at the Kingsmill Resort.
Coach Jim Cotner will have a senior, two juniors, a sophomore and a freshman in his five-man lineup at both tournaments. Juniors Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck), who tied for the team scoring lead in the fall with 75.3 averages, join senior Brian Poe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Gilmour Academy), sophomore Ben Mattingly (Fishers, Ind./Park Tudor) and freshman Patrick Morsches (Alpharetta, Ga./Marist School).
Cool, breezy conditions greeted the teams in Bethany Beach for Thursday's practice rounds. Bucknell will be part of a 20-team field that also includes host George Washington, Binghamton, Boston College, Colgate, Delaware, Duquesne, High Point, Hofstra, Holy Cross, Longwood, Mount St. Mary's, Navy, Niagara, Penn, Quinnipiac, Rhode Island, Skidmore, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Villanova.
Bucknell finished in the top five in four of six fall tournaments, including a victory at the Bucknell Invitational.
Last spring, Bucknell placed fifth at the George Washington Invitational and took ninth at Kingsmill.
The Bison will pack in six tournaments between now and the Patriot League Championship, which will be contested at the West Point Golf Course Apr. 25-26.
