LEWISBURG, Pa. - In a remarkably tight race for the Patriot League Presidents' Cup, Bucknell holds the slimmest of leads over Navy, with several other programs also within striking distance heading into the spring season. Bucknell, which has captured league's all-sports trophy 14 times in the 18-year history of the league, has accumulated 66 points through the end of the winter campaign, while second-place Navy is right behind with 65.75 points.
Army, the only other program besides Bucknell to have won a Presidents' Cup, is in third place with 62.25 points, followed by American and Colgate with 57, Lehigh with 53, Holy Cross with 44 and Lafayette with 37.5.
Patriot League Presidents' Cup points are awarded based on a team's performance in the regular season and postseason Patriot League standings. In cross country, football, golf, rowing, swimming and diving and track and field, the points are awarded on the final team standings. In team sports with postseason tournaments, points are awarded based on the average of the team's finish at the Patriot League championship and the regular-season standings.
The races for the men's and women's trophies are just as tight. Bucknell is in a dead heat with Navy for the lead in the women's cup race with 39 points, with Army (33.5) and American (32.5) close behind. In the men's standings, Army (28.75) has a small lead on Colgate (27.25), Bucknell (27), Lehigh (27) and Navy (26.75).
Bucknell took the overall points lead on the strength of second-place finishes in men's swimming and diving and men's and women's track and field, along with a third-place showing in women's swimming and diving.
In the spring, Patriot League championships will be contested in baseball, softball, men's and women's lacrosse, men's golf, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's outdoor track and field and women's rowing.
