LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell Department of Athletics & Recreation's annual celebration of National Girls & Women in Sports Day kicks off on Wednesday at the monthly Women's Sports Luncheon, sponsored by Evangelical Community Hospital. The luncheon will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Terrace Room inside the Elaine Langone Center on campus. Lunch may be purchased for $9.
This year's theme is "Look Who's Playing." The luncheon agenda includes a panel of guest speakers who will be examining the role of sports in the lives of girls and women in our community.
As part of Bucknell's recognition of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, Bison student athletes are also promoting a youth literacy campaign entitled, "Read Like a Champion." This week, 18 Bucknell student-athletes will be visiting kindergarten classes at Kelly Elementary School as well as the Lewisburg Public Library. The Bucknell students will be reading the children's book "Do Princesses Scrape Their Knees," by Carmela LaVigna Coyle, a story about a young girl's introduction to the world of sports, and that doing your best is what matters most.
The celebration will continue on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when Bucknell will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Night at Sojka Pavilion. That night the Bison women's basketball team takes on Lafayette, and at that contest there will be face painting, poster making, an autograph signing and a halftime recognition of all of the monthly women's sports honorees. In addition, representatives from the Lewisburg Public Library will be at the game to promote a Library Card Campaign, encouraging children to get their very own library card.
