LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Bucknell wrestling's David Marble, Kevin LeValley and Andy Rendos entered Saturday's competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational with the guarantee of finishing in the top-eight in their respective weight classes. Each bettered that and finished in the top six, with Rendos' fourth-place showing at 165 pounds the best.
As a team, Bucknell finished 12th out of 42 teams with 60 points. Last year the Bison were 21st of 44 at the competitive event. Bucknell was the second-highest EIWA team in the final standings, behind only runner-up Cornell. The Bison were two spots ahead of Navy and six ahead of Harvard. Ohio State won the team title with 122.5 points.
Nine Bucknell wrestlers traveled to Las Vegas, but six were eliminated from competition on Friday's first day. Of the remaining trio, Rendos, who won his 100th career match this weekend, had the best day Saturday, going 2-1. He advanced to the third-place match with decisions over Buffalo's John-Martin Cannon and No. 13 Paul Young of Indiana. In the third-place match, Rendos, who is ranked sixth nationally, was pinned by Shane Onufer. Rendos had also lost to Onufer, who is unranked, in Friday's quarterfinals.
Despite the losses to Onufer, Rendos carries a 15-2 record this year and is now 103-27 in his career, placing him three wins behind Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Tom Marchetti for second place on the program's all-time list.
LeValley matched Rendos with a 2-1 mark Saturday, but placed fifth in the 149-pound weight class. In his first match he met No. 17 Peter Yates and defeated him for the third time this season, 6-2. LeValley, who is 4-3 against ranked opponents this year, then lost to No. 5 Kyle Terry of Oklahoma by a 6-4 decision. However, he bounced back in the fifth-place bout to defeat Harvard's Walter Peppelman by tech fall (19-2).
LeValley is now 18-3 this season with all three losses to top-10 opponents by decision.
Like Rendos and LeValley, Marble, who is ranked No. 20 at 133 pounds, won his first bout Saturday, defeating Utah Valley's Flint Ray 14-3. However, Marble then lost his other two matches to finish sixth overall, matching his finish from last year.
The Bison will now be idle until they return to dual competition Friday, Dec. 18, when they host Drexel and Princeton in Davis Gym. Start time for the tri-meet is 11 a.m. Admission is free.
