LEWISBURG, Pa. – Last year the Bucknell wrestling team sent six individuals to the NCAA Championships, saw Andy Rendos become the program's first All-American in a decade-and-a-half and finished in a tie for 29th place in the country. With all six NCAA qualifiers returning and a strong senior class, expectations are high for the Bison entering 2009-10.
Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN) released its preseason Tournament Power Index (TPI) on Monday and Bucknell is ranked 31st, one spot ahead of EIWA rival Navy. Additionally, five Bison show up in the individual weight class rankings, including David Marble (133), Kevin LeValley (149), Rendos (165), Shane Riccio (174) and David Thompson (184).
Rendos, who finished fifth in the nation at 165 pounds last year, is the highest ranked Bucknell grappler at No. 6. Three-time NCAA qualifier Marble is 12th at 133 pounds, while two-time NCAA Championships participant Riccio is No. 16 at 174. LeValley and Thompson both show up at No. 18 in their respective weight classes.
Bucknell is the fifth EIWA squad to be listed in the rankings, following No. 3 Cornell, No. 15 Harvard, No. 20 American and No. 27 Lehigh.
The Bison will wrestle no fewer than three teams ranked ahead of them this season, including No. 1 Iowa. The Hawkeyes will visit Sojka Pavilion along with Rutgers on Nov. 27. For ticket information regarding that highly anticipated match, click here.
The WIN Magazine TPI awards point totals to teams based on the individual rankings.
