LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell volleyball team is taking on the challenge of Empowering Everyone's Kids (EEK) when it hosts its first promotion for local elementary school children at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday night. The event coincides with the Bison's volleyball match against St. Francis (N.Y.) at 7 p.m. in Davis Gym. The first 150 kids in attendance will receive free t-shirts.
Created in an effort to develop a stronger relationship between Bucknell volleyball and the Lewisburg community, EEK strives to increase mentoring and instructional opportunities for student-athletes and local kids. The events allow members of the volleyball team to serve as role models and to teach their young fans about the positive energy surrounding athletics and the game of volleyball.
“It's a community service event designed to create the opportunity for our student-athletes to spend some time working with the Lewisburg community,” said head coach Cindy Opalski.
Opalski sees EEK as a winning situation for all those involved. While her student-athletes gain leadership experience and sparks children's interest in the sport, the community has the opportunity to become involved with the university and its students while gaining exposure to a healthy game that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.
EEK Night on Tuesday is co-sponsored by Bucknell Public Safety and Dining Services.
The Bucknell volleyball team is 4-9 during the 2008 season. Following their home match against St. Francis (N.Y.), the Bison will hit the road again for a pair of Patriot League matches. Army will host the Orange and Blue at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3 in West Point, N.Y. Bucknell then continues its road trip to Holy Cross for a 4 p.m. matchup on Saturday, Oct. 4 in Worcester, Mass.
