HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Scores skyrocketed on a tough final day of the Colgate Invitational, and the Bucknell men's golf team could not avoid a few of those lofty scorecards and settled for a tie for third place.
The Bison entered the day just a single stroke behind Binghamton for the team lead, thanks in large part to the 3-under-par 69 by Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) in round one on Saturday. But Cohen shot 84 on Sunday and Jeff Pike (Rye, N.Y./Rye) slipped six strokes to a 79, as the Bison shot 320 as a team.
Bucknell's low round was a solid 2-over 74 from Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck), which was just one shot off the best of the day in the field.
Parker Phillips (Laguna Beach, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal) shot 83 and Brian Poe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) finished with an 88.
Binghamton shot 304 as a team on Sunday and won the team title by 12 shots over Saint Francis (Pa.), which moved all the way up from seventh to second place. Bucknell and Lehigh tied for third at 623, followed by Colgate and Ottawa at 627 in the 12-team field.
Mike Carbo of Binghamton won the individual title in a playoff over Julien Proulx of Laval. Both played 36 holes in 147.
Only 23 of 59 players broke 80 in round two, and none shot par or better.
Bucknell will be back in action next weekend at the Cornell Invitational.
