HAMILTON, N.Y. - Bucknell junior Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) shot a 3-under-par 69 to help the Bison men's golf team to the second-best round on the opening day of the Colgate Invitational, a 303 that has them just one shot off the lead with 18 holes remaining on Sunday.
Bucknell trails Binghamton by just one shot heading into the final round. The Bearcats shot 302 on the difficult Seven Oaks GC course. Bucknell has a five-shot lead on third-place Lafayette (308), while Lehigh (309), Colgate (312) and Laval (312) round out the top five in the 12-team field.
Bison head coach Jim Cotner referred to Cohen's round as "superb" given the lightning-fast greens and tough course conditions at Seven Oaks. Cohen's 3-under total was a career best, bettering his 2-under 70 at the NCAA West Regional at Arizona State in the spring of 2007.
Cohen has a two-stroke lead in the individual standings over Tyler Ostrowsky of Lafayette and Julien Proulx of Laval, who both shot 71.
Bucknell's Jeff Pike (Rye, N.Y./Rye), coming off his victory at the Bucknell Invitational last week, shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for fourth place with two others. Also for Bucknell, Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck) shot 80, Parker Phillips (Laguna Beach, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal) carded an 81, and Brian Poe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) shot 84.
