Bucknell Women's Tennis Prepared For Two Matches This Weekend

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team is prepared to host Pittsburgh on Friday afternoon and will open its Patriot League schedule on Saturday afternoon at Colgate. The Bison were set to begin Patriot League play this past Tuesday at home against Lehigh, however the match was rescheduled for Monday, April 7, at 3 p.m., due to rainy weather conditions. Most recently, the Bison suffered a 7-0 loss to UMBC at home on March 29; the Orange and Blue moved to 5-6 on the season.
Bucknell Women's Tennis Notebook
Against UMBC, March 29 -
- Bucknell fell with a score of 7-0 to UMBC at home, snapping a four-match winning streak and moving to 5-6 on the season, while the Retrievers improved to 7-3 in 2008.
- In doubles, sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) won their fifth straight match to improve to 5-2 on the season. The pair defeated Alice Chen and Cornelia Carapeca, 8-6, at the No. 1 position.
The Pittsburgh Panthers -
- The Panthers currently hold a record of 9-7 this spring.
- In a series that began in 1981, Bucknell has defeated Pittsburgh 13 times and has suffered eight losses against the Panthers. Last season, on Feb. 2, Pittsburgh came away with a 7-0 win against the Bison.
The Colgate Raiders -
- Currently, Colgate holds a record of 8-5 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League, picking up a win against Lehigh.
- In a series that began in 1977, Bucknell has picked up 10 wins and has suffered 19 losses against Colgate. This past season, Colgate defeated Bucknell, 4-3, on April 8, and Bucknell was then victorious, 4-3, over Colgate in the Patriot League tournament, April 29.
Team Leaders -
- On the season, Lucido leads the Bison in doubles wins, adding her sixth of the season against UMBC. Varela follows with five doubles wins.
- In singles, Lucido and freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) lead the way with six wins each, while sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) follows with five.
- In the record books, junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) maintains her spot as No. 9 on Bucknell's all-time list for combined victories, now with 83 wins. She also remains No. 9 for all-time doubles victories with 42.

Honors for 2007-08 Season -
- On Jan. 31, Bucknell was picked second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, with 40 points and two first-place votes. Army took the No. 1 spot with 49 points and nine first-place points. Colgate took third (35 points, one first-place vote), Lehigh was fourth (27 points), Lafayette was fifth (17 points) and Holy Cross rounded out the list in sixth (12 points).
- On Oct. 3, Lucido was named Patriot League Player of the Month for women's tennis. To open her collegiate career, Lucido posted a 10-2 combined record in September. She went 2-1 in singles and 8-1 in doubles when paired with Varela.
Looking Ahead -
- Following the match at Colgate on April 5, Bucknell will travel to Army on April 12, and to Lafayette on April 13. The Patriot League tournament is scheduled for April 18-20 in West Point, N.Y. and Bucknell will play additional matches against Delaware at home and Bloomsburg away, April 22 and April 23, respectively.
