LEWISBURG, Pa. - After securing two big road victories last week, the Bucknell men's lacrosse team claimed two Patriot League Player of the Week nods on Monday. Sophomore attackman Austin Winter (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes) was named the league's offensive player of the week, while junior Nick Sciubba (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Salisbury School) was selected as the goalie of the week.
Now 7-2 on the season and ranked No. 13 in the USILA Coaches' Poll, Bucknell defeated Towson 12-10 last Tuesday and Holy Cross 7-2 on Saturday.
Winter, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year, filled the boxscore with a career-high nine points in the big non-league win over Towson. He logged three goals and six assists, giving him a hand in 75 percent of the team's goals.
Winter's previous scoring high was seven points, when he had four goals and three assists against Holy Cross last season. The last Bison to score as many as nine points in a game was Chris Cara in 2005 against Marist. Cara also had three goals and six helpers in that one. The nine points and six assists are both tied for the second-highest single-game totals in Division I lacrosse this season.
Winter leads the Patriot League in assists per game with 19 in nine games, and his 30 points rank second in the league.
Sciubba had two big games last week, as well, particularly in Saturday's Patriot League victory over Holy Cross. Sciubba made a season-high 15 saves in that game while allowing only two goals. The Bison defense was tossing a shutout until the final minute of the first half, and they allowed only one even-strength goal all day.
Sciubba also had 12 saves in the Towson win. He is now up to third in the Patriot League in both save percentage (.577) and goals-against average (7.39).
Bucknell has a critical home game on Friday night against 14th-ranked Army. The Black Knights are 7-2 (3-0 Patriot League), and the 7 p.m. contest will surely have major Patriot League Tournament seeding consequences.
