DOVER, Del. - A home run and a total of five RBI by junior Dane Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) helped the Bucknell baseball team take game two of a doubleheader at Delaware State, 10-7 in eight innings, after dropping game one, 12-5. With the split, the Bison are now, 7-9-2 on the season, while the Hornets sit at 4-16.
Over the two games, Grandizio led the Orange and Blue at the plate, going 4-for-8 with six RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) was 3-for-6 with four runs scored and senior Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) finished the day 3-for-8 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI.
In game two, Bucknell jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The Bison loaded the bases with three walks in the first and sophomore John Avanzino (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) brought home Yoder with a sacrifice fly. The next batter, senior Austin Turban (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) was hit by a pitch and senior Shawn Hirsch (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) followed with a bases-clearing double that scored senior Mark Angelo (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown), Buursma, and Turban.
The Orange and Blue tacked on a fifth run in the top of the second. Yoder roped a one-out double to left center and came in on an RBI single by Grandizio.
Delaware State pulled to within one with two homers in the second, a solo shot by Alex Carter and a three-run blast by Wynton Weather. Then in the third, the Hornets tied the score at five with another home run, this time by Justin Bittner.
The Bison went back on top in the fourth, scoring twice. Junior Bret Sokirka (Wyoming, Pa./Wyoming Area) reached on an error and crossed the plate on another error. Then Angelo singled in Yoder, who reached with a one-out hit earlier in the frame.
In the bottom of the sixth, Delaware State crept back to within one with a home run by Jose Sanchez and tied it to force extra innings with a run on two hits in the seventh. Down to their last out, the Hornets extended the contest with an RBI single up the middle by Jarrett Bibb.
Bucknell promptly re-took the lead in the top of the eighth. After junior Andrew Loucks (Mississauga, Ontario/Appleby College) singled and Yoder was hit by a pitch, Grandizio blasted a home run, his third of the season to right, putting the Bison back on top, 10-7.
Buursma tossed five innings of relief to collect the victory (3-0) in game two. He allowed two runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Jamie Friel worked all eight innings for Delaware State and was pinned with the loss (0-3). He gave up 10 runs, eight earned, on nine hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Delaware State used four home runs to power to a game one victory, starting with a solo shot in the first by Jose Portela. With one out in the second, Ryne Scheiwe began an eight run-second for the Hornets with a homer to left. Chris Kidd later capped off the frame with a three-run drive.
Trailing 9-0, the Orange and Blue responded with three runs in the top of the third. With one out, Grandizio was hit by a pitch and senior Angelor reached on an error. Buursma followed with a home run to center, his fifth of the season to bring the Bison to within 9-3.
Bucknell added another run with two down in the fifth. Buursma drove a single into right center and was brought in on a double by senior Chris Pieper (Port Washington, N.Y./Schreiber).
Then in the sixth, the Orange and Blue saw the first two hitters of the frame reach base. Senior Ed Rubbo (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) led off with a single and Yoder reached on an error. Grandizio singled to left to bring home Rubbo, but that would be all for the Bison, who left nine on base in the contest.
Delaware State added three more runs in the sixth on a home run by Sanchez, his first of two on the day, to bring the final score to 12-5.
Junior Andy Campbell (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic) started for Bucknell and took the loss (0-1), working 1.1 innings and allowing three runs on six hits with no walks and one strikeout. Josh Schmidt pitched six innings for the Hornets and gave up five runs, four earned, on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts to earn the victory (2-3).
