LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior right-hander Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) was recognized as the Patriot League Baseball Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. The accolade, which marks the third weekly award for a member of the Orange and Blue this season, was Buursma's second career recognition for his work on the mound and fifth weekly honor overall as he has been named Player of the Week once and was the league's Rookie of the Week twice in 2005.
On Monday, Mar. 10, Buursma tossed a career-high nine innings, helping the Bison to an 8-1 victory over Eastern Kentucky in Bradenton, Fla. He held the Colonels to just one run and scattered seven hits in the complete game outing, while walking one and striking out six.
Later in the week, Buursma made two relief appearances and held his opponents hitless in two scoreless innings, throwing one against Akron, logging two strikeouts, and working the other against Eastern Illinois.
In addition, Buursma had a stellar week at the plate as he hit .467, going 7-for-15 with three home runs, three RBI and four runs scored. His three homers helped him move into the top-10 in Bucknell history in the category as he now has 15 for his career, good for 10th all-time.
The Bison (5-7-2) are slated to make their 2008 home debut tomorrow, Mar. 18, against Niagara at 3:30 p.m. on Depew Field.
