LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Competing at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, the Bucknell wrestling team saw both David Marble (133) and Andy Rendos (165) advance to the quarterfinals of their respective weight classes on Friday. Four other Bison wrestlers were still alive in the consolation rounds heading into Friday's late bouts at the competitive two-day event.
Seven Bison traveled to Las Vegas and six remained alive going into the Friday night session. Overall, Bucknell had 20 team points to rank 20th out of nearly 50 teams. The Bison were within nine points of five fellow EIWA squads that were ahead of them in the standings.
Marble, who is ranked 16th nationally at 133 pounds and is seeded fourth in this weekend's field, posted two wins on Friday to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Cal State Fullerton's T.J. Dillashaw. Marble has defeated Dillashaw, who is ranked 17th nationally, at each of the last two NCAA Championships.
Rendos, who is ranked 14th at 165 pounds and is the fifth seed this weekend, also posted two victories, including his team-high sixth pin of the year, over unranked foes to reach the quarterfinals. Rendos' quarterfinal matchup will be against Penn's Zach Shanaman, who is ranked eighth nationally and is the fourth seed in the tournament. Rendos lost 2-0 to Shanaman in their only meeting last year.
Kevin LeValley (149), Shane Riccio (174) and David Thompson (184) each posted one victory during Friday's early session, but came one win shy of the quarterfinals in their respective weight classes. Each is still alive in the wrestlebacks.
Derek Reber (125) and Jay Hahn (197) were the only Bison that did not pick up a win in the championship brackets. Hahn dropped his first consolation match to be eliminated from competition, but Reber, who is the 13th seed, won a pair of bouts in the consolation rounds to remain alive for a finish as high as third with six more victories.
The Bison will wrap up competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Saturday. The championship finals are slated for 8 p.m. Eastern.
