COLUMBIA, Mo - The Bucknell wrestling team held a 6-5 lead after three bouts, but could not fend off No. 8 Missouri, falling by the score of 30-9 on Friday evening in the Hearnes Center. With the loss, the Bison drop to 3-5, while the Tigers remain undefeated at 5-0.
After a 16-1 technical fall by 125-pounder John Olanowski over freshman José Matos (Williamstown, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) gave Missouri a 5-0 advantage, sophomore David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Central), ranked No. 20 in the latest InterMat/NWCA/NWMA Division I Individual Rankings, responded by upsetting No. 9 Tyler McCormick in the 133-pound bout.
McCormick opened the first period with a takedown, but Marble battled back with six straight points, including a near fall, to lead 6-2 heading into the second. McCormick pulled to within two at 7-5 when Marble responded with an escape and a takedown and remained comfortably in front for the remainder on the way to a 16-9 victory.
Sophomore Luke Chohany (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) followed up with a win at 141 to put the Orange and Blue on top, 6-5. After Marcus Hoehn struck first with a takedown, Chohany evened the score by escaping in the first and again in the second. He then scored the winning near fall in the third for a 5-2 decision.
Bucknell's lead was brief, however, as the Tigers went on to record back-to back major decisions at 149 and 157. No. 17 Josh Wagner blanked 149-pounder Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon), 13-0, and No. 13 Michael Chandler defeated sophomore Brantley Hooks (Spartanburg, S.C./James F. Byrnes), 14-3.
Then in the 165-pound match-up, 20th-ranked sophomore Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) was edged by No. 4 Nicholas Marable, 3-2.
The third victory of the night by a Bison came at 174 as Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) posted a 4-2 decision over James Williamson. Riccio began with a 2-0 lead with a takedown in the first and later added two more points in the third on two escapes.
At 184, No. 6 Raymond Jordan won by technical fall over Bucknell freshman David Thompson (West Liberty, Ohio/Graham Local), 18-3. Freshman 197-pounder Charlie Wonsettler (Scenery Hill, Pa./Bentworth) suffered a 9-4 setback to Josh Skurnik and No. 12 Mark Ellis closed out the evening's action by pinning Bison heavyweight George Hingson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) in 5:31.
Bucknell will next travel to New York, N.Y., this Sunday, Jan. 6, where the squad will take on Wagner at the New York Athletic Club beginning at 6 p.m.
