Bucknell Women's Tennis To Face Duquesne, Saturday

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team will host Duquesne, this Saturday, Feb. 2, in a dual at the West Branch Tennis Club. The Bison (0-1) played at the Cornell Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y., this past weekend, and opened the 2008 season at Penn State on Jan. 22.

At the Cornell Invitational, Jan. 25 - 27 -
- Freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls School For Girls) and sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) advanced to the semifinal in Flight 1 doubles. Lucido and Varela had a bye in the first round and went on to defeat Niki Flach (last year's Patriot League Player of the Year) and Brooke Jones of Army, 8-4. The pair then faced No. 2-seeded Sinziana Chris and Shayna Miller of Cornell in the semifinal round, falling 8-6.
- Also in Flight 1 doubles, sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) fell to Lauren Bates and Anna Edelman of Binghamton, 8-3. The pair played a back draw match against Anne Houghton and Sarah Giles-Madden of Army, falling 8-6.
- Senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) and freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) advanced to the semifinal round in the consolation bracket of Flight 2 doubles. The pair fell to Ashley Ebbert and Melissa Orteza of Cornell, 8-2, and went on to win a back draw match against Danielle Kashou and Nicole Scarangella of Binghamton, 8-1. Baffa and Dwojewski played Josephine Bergman and Anastasiia Rukavshykova of Temple in the consolation semifinal, falling, 8-6.
- Also in Flight 2 doubles, sophomores Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) and Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) fell to Diana Alquero of Army and Weatherly Schwab of Cornell, 8-6, and then lost to Gayathri Balasundar and Danyelle Shapiro of Binghamton, 9-8 and 7-4 in a tie-breaker.
- In Flight 1 singles, No. 2-seeded Varela fell in her first match against Dina Senkina of Temple, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6, and went on to drop her back draw match to Bates. Also in Flight 1 singles, Lucido dropped her first match against Edelman, 6-4, 6-3, and was defeated in a back draw match against Dana Cruite of Cornell, 6-1, 6-4.
- In Flight 2 singles, Calcaterra fell to Shapiro in the first round, 6-2, 6-4, and then to Rukavyshnykova in a back draw match, 6-0, 4-6, 11-9. Dwojewski was defeated by Kristin Beehler of Army, and then dropped a back draw match against Rukavyshnykova, 7-6, 6-2. Gamboa dropped her first round match to Lucie Pazderova of Temple, 6-0, 7-5, and fell in a back draw match to Giles-Madden, 6-0, 4-6, 10-3.
- In Flight 3 singles, Weissend won her first match against Kashou, 6-2, 7-6, and fell in the second round to No. 1-seeded Bergman, 6-1, 6-4. Baffa fell in the first round of Flight 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2, to Schwab, and then to Vermono in a back draw match, 6-0, 6-0. Sotak fell to Erica Rosenblum of Binghamton, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round and then in a back draw match to Vemono, 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) played Jurlle Meneloza of Army in the first round, falling, 6-4, 6-4, and then dropped her back draw match, 7-5, 6-5, to Scarangella.
Against the Nittany Lions, Jan. 22 -
- The Bison fell to the Nittany Lions, 7-0, bringing Bucknell to 0-1 while Penn State improved to 1-0 on the season.
- Lucido and Varela played in the No. 1 doubles position, falling to Jenny Shular and Katelyn BeVard of Penn State, 8-4.
- Varela played at the No. 1 position in singles, dropping, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, to BeVard.
Bison in Fall 2007 Tournament Play -
- Bucknell closed out the fall season at the ITA East Regional Championships in Norfolk, Va. on Oct. 20, with Lucido and Varela falling in the third round of doubles, 9-8, 7-4, to 11th-seeded Michal Amir and Julia Huschke of Maryland to bring the duo's doubles record to 10-2 for the fall season. Lucido and Varela opened the weekend with a win over Walaa Elsir and Alexis McCoy of Morgan State in the first round, 8-2, and went on to upset the sixth-seeded pair, Elizabeth Googe and Susan Sullivan of Cornell, 8-6, in the second round.
- Gamboa held a 5-5 overall singles record on the season, 3-1 in Flight 1 and 1-2 in Flight 2. Lucido went 1-1 in Flight 1 singles (3-3 overall) and Varela went 1-3 in Flight 1 singles (1-3 overall).
- In doubles play, Lucido and Varela led the Bison with a record of 5-2 in Flight 1 and 10-2 overall. Baffa and Dwojewski posted a 5-4 doubles record, 3-1 in Flight 1, while Gamboa and Calcaterra went 3-7 overall and 3-5 in Flight 1.
Honors for 2007-08 Season -
- On Oct. 3, Lucido was named Patriot League Player of the Month for women's tennis. To open her collegiate career, Lucido posted a 10-2 combined record in September. She went 2-1 in singles and 8-1 in doubles when paired with Varela.
Looking Ahead -
- Up next, the Bison will return to Ithaca, N.Y., on Feb. 9, for a dual against Cornell at 9 a.m. and Quinnipiac at 4 p.m.
