Bucknell Women's Tennis Closes Out Day Two At Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's tennis team continued play at the Cornell Invitational on Saturday. In the second day of doubles play, freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls School For Girls) and sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) played in the semifinal round of Flight 1, after winning their first match on Friday. The pair faced No. 2-seeded Sinziana Chris and Shayna Miller of Cornell on Saturday morning, and were defeated, 8-6.
In Flight 2 doubles, senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) and freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) faced Josephine Bergman and Anastasiia Rukavshykova of Temple in the semifinal of the consolation bracket. The pair fell, 8-6.
In Flight 1 singles, No. 2-seeded Varela fell in her first match against Dina Senkina of Temple, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6. Varela went on to drop her back draw match to Lauren Bates of Binghamton. Also in Flight 1 singles, Lucido dropped her first match against Anna Edelman of Binghamton, 6-4, 6-3. Lucido then faced Dana Cruite of Cornell in a back draw match and was defeated, 6-1, 6-4.
In Flight 2 singles, sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) fell to Danielle Shapiro of Binghamton in the first round, 6-2, 6-4, and is set to play Rukavyshnykova in a back draw match on Sunday. Dwojewski was defeated by Kristin Beehler of Army, and then dropped a back draw match against Rukavyshnykova, 7-6, 6-2. Junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) dropped her first round match to Lucie Pazderova of Temple, 6-0, 7-5, and fell in a back draw match to Carah Giles-Madden of Army, 6-0, 4-6, 10-3.
Sophomore Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) won her first match in Flight 3 singles against Danielle Kashou of Binghamton, 6-2, 7-6, and fell in the second round to No. 1-seeded Josephine Bergman of Temple, 6-1, 6-4. Baffa fell in the first round of Flight 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2, to Weatherly Schwab Cornell, but is set to play Vermono in a back draw match on Sunday. Sophomore Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) fell to Erica Rosenblum of Binghamton, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round and then in a back draw match to Robie Vemono of Army, 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) played Jurlle Meneloza of Army in the first round, falling, 6-4, 6-4, and then dropped her back draw match, 7-5, 6-5, to Nicole Scarangella of Binghamton.
The Cornell Invitational will conclude on Sunday.
