HAMPTON, Va. - Five members of the Orange and Blue posted two individual wins apiece in the day's action, but as a team, Bucknell wresting came away from the Virginia Duals with one tie and two setbacks, dropping its first two contests, 26-9 to Kent State and 16-15 to Lehigh, before closing out the tournament with a 17-17 tie against Oregon State. The Bison are now 4-7-1 in duals on the season, 1-2-0 in the EIWA.
Sophomore Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) went 2-0 to lead the squad individually, while sophomore David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Central), freshman Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon), sophomore Brantley Hooks (Spartanburg, S.C./James F. Byrnes) and sophomore Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) all finished with 2-1 records following the three duals.
In the opener against seventh-seeded Kent State, the Golden Flashes jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Nicholas Bedelyon posted a 12-0 major decision over sophomore Greg Hart (Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) in the 125-pound bout. Marble, who is ranked No. 16 at 133 pounds according to the latest InterMat/NWCA/NWMA Division I Individual Rankings, responded for the Orange and Blue with an upset over No. 13 Dan Mitchell, 10-7, to cut the deficit to one.
Then, with an 8-5 decision by No. 14 Drew Lashaway against Bucknell sophomore Luke Chohany (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) at 141, Kent State stretched its lead back out to four.
The Bison followed up with two victories to take its first lead, 9-7. LeValley collected a 3-2 win versus Clint Sponseller at 149 and Hooks notched a 2-1 victory against Sli Bostelman in the 157-pound bout.
That would be all for Bucknell, however, as the Golden Flashes went on to sweep the final five bouts, including one major decision and one pin, to bring the final score to 26-9.
In the first round of the consolation bracket, the Bison came up just short, 17-16, in an evenly-matched contest against EIWA-foe Lehigh. Freshman José Matos (Williamstown, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) gave the Bison a 3-0 advantage with his 6-5 decision against Mitch Berger at 125, but Marble suffered a 6-2 setback at 133 against Seth Ciasulli to level the score at 3-3.
Chohany downed Jeff Santo, 9-3, in the 141-pound match-up. However, the tug-of-war continued between the squads as the Mountain Hawks took their first lead after back-to-back wins at 149 and 157. Trevor Chinn edged LeValley, 3-2, and Hooks came up just short versus Dave Nakasone, 3-1.
Bucknell took the 165-pound bout as Rendos blanked Mike Galante, 6-0, but Alex Caruso regained the three-point advantage for Lehigh with a 13-6 decision over freshman Rob Waltko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) at 174.
Riccio then brought the Bison even with the Mountain Hawks once more as he defeated Kadeem Samuels, 6-0, at 184.
The lone bonus-point win of the match came at 197 as Alex Iacocca posted a 15-6 major decision over Bucknell freshman Charlie Wonsettler (Scenery Hill, Pa./Bentworth). That would prove to be the difference in the score as sophomore heavyweight George Hingson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) closed things out with a 7-3 win for the Orange and Blue against Justin Allen, which left the Bison one point shy of Lehigh's total.
Against Oregon State, Bucknell fell behind, 3-0, after Matos dropped a 5-1 decision to Jake Gonzales in the 125-pound bout, but quickly rebounded with an 18-2 technical fall by Marble at 133 versus Clifton Ivanoff.
Chohany suffered a 12-8 setback against Heinrich Barnes, briefly giving the Beavers a 6-5 advantage, when the Bison rattled off four straight victories. LeValley won, 6-4, over Kyle Larson at 149, Hooks edged Dan Brascetta, 3-2, at 157, Rendos logged a 7-3 decision against Keegan Davis at 165 and Shane Riccio was victorious by a 2-1 margin in the 174-pound match-up.
With the Orange and Blue leading, 17-6, Oregon State took the final three bouts on two decisions and a technical fall to salvage the 17-17 draw.
Bucknell will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 18, when the squad will return home for an EIWA dual-meet against Brown, which is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. in Davis Gym.
