LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell softball team was cited by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association this week for its strong academic performance during the 2007 season. The Bison were ranked 26th nationally with a team grade-point average of 3.329, six spots higher than their 2006 showing.
Bucknell, which landed a league-high 11 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll last year, was the top team in the Patriot League. Lehigh, which showed up at No. 31 in the academic rankings with a 3.287 GPA, was the only other Patriot League team in the rankings.
St. Bonaventure, Southern Illinois and Eastern Michigan were the top three teams.
The Bison lost just three seniors from last year's team and will return a strong nucleus in 2008. Additionally, Bucknell has a large seven-person freshman class that will be counted on to contribute. The Bison are slated to open their 2008 campaign Feb. 15-17 at the Lancer Leadoff Classic in Farmville, Va.
