
Bucknell Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to UMES

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Despite taking game two after falling down, 1-0, the Bucknell volleyball team could not complete the comeback, dropping a 3-1 decision to Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday evening in Davis Gym. Following the loss, the Bison are now 6-8 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 6-3.
In the opening frame, UMES used a 6-0 run to pull in front after trailing Bucknell, 14-12. The Orange and Blue rallied back to within a point at 29-28, but a costly service error would seal the 30-28 game one win for the Hawks.
After Maryland Eastern Shore had built an 18-14 lead in game two, the Bison broke out for a 14-3 run to climb ahead, 28-21. Bucknell went on to capture the 30-26 decision and tie the match at one game apiece.
Then in the third set, UMES raced out to a 21-9 advantage and posted a 30-19 victory behind a .586 team hitting percentage with 19 kills and just two errors on 29 attempts.
In the final frame, Bucknell fell behind early but recovered, managing to knot the score at 22. However, the Hawks responded with an 8-1 stretch to record the 30-23 win and clinch the match.
Senior Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) led the Bison offense with 18 kills and hit .341 (18-4-41) while also contributing eight digs. Freshman Kaitlin Segal (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) followed with 17 kills and four blocks, classmate Heidi Kamp (Springfield, Ore./Henry D. Sheldon) had 10 kills and five blocks and junior Emilie Hardinge (Darien, Conn./Darien) added eight kills. Junior setter Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) tallied 53 assists and eight digs and sophomore Jennifer Rupp (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) totaled a match-best 19 digs.
For UMES, Whitney Johnson headed up the attack with 29 kills and hit .404 (29-8-52). Holliday Eller compiled 15 kills and hit .429 (15-3-28), while Caylin Woodward recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. Setter Christina Estebane' posted a double-double, as well, with 55 assists and 15 digs and Leah Admundson chipped in with three service aces and 14 digs.
Bucknell will be back in action this Friday, Sept. 21, as the squad will open Patriot League play with a match against Lehigh at 7 p.m. in Davis Gym.
