Bucknell Women's Tennis Continues Fall Season At Army This Weekend

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team is set to travel to West Point, N.Y. for the ITA Eastern Championships this weekend. The tournament will run Friday, Sept. 14 - Sunday, Sept. 16. The Bison opened the 2007 fall season last weekend with a successful showing at the Bloomsburg Invitational.

Last Weekend at the Bloomsburg Invitational -
- The Bucknell women's tennis team opened 2007 at the Bloomsburg Invitational last weekend against Bloomsburg, Binghamton, and Niagara.
- On day one of the Bloomsburg Invitational, Bucknell picked up three doubles and four singles wins. On day two, the Bison collected eight singles and two doubles victories, bringing the women to 12 singles and five doubles wins for the weekend.
- In doubles on Saturday, sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) paired to defeat Anna Edelman and Nicole Scorongella of Binghamton 9-7. Freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and senior captain Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) defeated Fisher and Manca of Bloomsburg, 8-2. Additionally, sophomore Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) and sophomore Renee Weissend (Honeoye, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) topped Carney and Cunningham from Bloomsburg, 8-4.
- In singles for day one, Lucido went on to defeat Hasyn of Bloomsburg 6-3, 6-1, and Dwojewski won her match over Carney of Bloomsburg, 6-0, 6-2. Baffa also picked up a win over Fisher of Bloomsburg, 6-1, 6-1, and sophomore JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) topped Manca of Bloomsburg, 6-0, 6-0.
- On Sunday, in doubles action, Grossman paired with sophomore Megan Lee (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield) to defeat Manca and Fisher of Bloomsburg 8-5. Dwojewski and Baffa paired once again to go 8-2 over Nissenbaum and Hasyn of Bloomsburg.
- Also on day two, Lee went on to post two wins in singles, over Carney of Bloomsburg, 6-2, 6-2, and Manca of Bloomsburg, 6-4, 6-3. Junior Tiffany Card (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) also had two singles wins over Manca of Bloomsburg, 6-1,6-1, and Nicole Scarangella of Binghamton, 3-6, 6-3, 10-3. Sotak went 6-2, 6-2 over Carney of Bloomsburg and junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) won her match over Cunningham of Bloomsburg, 6-1, 6-1. Also tallying singles wins for Bucknell on day two were Dwojewski over Nissenbaum of Bloomsburg, 6-3, 6-0 and junior Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) against Fisher of Bloomsburg, 6-2, 6-0.
Looking Ahead -
- Following the Eastern Championships, the Bison will stay home two weekends in a row to host the Bucknell Invitational Sept. 28 - 30 and Oct. 5 - 7.
- ITA Regionals are set for Oct. 19 - 21 in Norfolk, Va.
